Oregano is much more than a flavorful herb sprinkled over pizza, pasta, grilled vegetables, or Mediterranean dishes. This small aromatic plant has been used in traditional cooking and herbal practices for centuries, and modern scientific research has taken a closer look at the compounds that give oregano its distinctive aroma and potential biological properties.
Among the most studied compounds in oregano are carvacrol and thymol, along with various flavonoids and phenolic acids. Laboratory and experimental research suggests that some of these compounds have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
