“What Is This on My Balcony?” — A Closer Look at This Strange Discovery

You step outside, coffee in hand… and suddenly you spot something bizarre on the floor. Soft, curled, slightly translucent, and honestly a bit unsettling. You stare at it, trying to figure it out—but nothing makes sense.

Let’s clear it up.

What You’re Actually Seeing

What’s shown in the image is most likely the remains of a large beetle larva, commonly known as a white grub.

These larvae are typically:

  • Thick, curved (C-shaped)
  • Creamy white with a darker head
  • Found in soil, gardens, or under plants

The one on the right side of the image looks intact, while the one on the left (circled) appears damaged or partially decomposed.

Where Do These Come From?

White grubs are the larval stage of beetles such as:

  • June beetle
  • Chafer beetle

They usually live underground, feeding on plant roots. So how did it end up on your balcony?

Why It’s on Your Balcony

There are a few very likely explanations:

1. A Bird Dropped It

Birds often dig up grubs to eat them. Sometimes they:

  • Drop them accidentally
  • Leave behind uneaten parts

👉 This is the most common reason.

2. A Predator Brought It There

Small animals like lizards or rodents may carry larvae to a safe spot to eat.

3. It Crawled Out (Less Likely)

Grubs usually stay in soil, so unless you have potted plants nearby, this is less probable.

Why Does It Look So Strange?

The unusual appearance (especially the slimy, stretched part) can be due to:

  • Physical damage (from a bird or fall)
  • Decomposition
  • Internal fluids leaking out

This makes it look far more “alien” than it really is.

Is It Dangerous?
