Sometimes called “lady’s finger,” okra is botanically a fruit, although it is prepared and eaten like a vegetable. It provides dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, minerals, and antioxidant compounds while being relatively low in calories.

But what actually happens in your body when you eat okra regularly?

The answer is more interesting than many people realize. Its fiber can support digestion and fullness, its micronutrients contribute to normal immune and cellular functions, and its plant compounds may have antioxidant and metabolic effects. Research has also investigated okra’s possible role in blood sugar and cholesterol management, although the scientific evidence is still developing and does not mean that okra should be considered a treatment or cure for disease.
