Padlocks are designed with durability and security in mind, but manufacturers also incorporate features that ensure the lock functions properly over time. One of these features is the small hole found at the bottom of some padlocks.
- Drainage
The primary purpose of this small hole is to allow water to drain out of the lock. When a padlock is used outdoors, it can be exposed to rain or condensation. If water accumulates inside, it can lead to rust and compromise the lock’s mechanism. The hole prevents this by providing a way for water to escape.
- Lubrication Access
The small hole also serves as an access point for maintenance. Over time, the internal components of a padlock may become stiff or less effective due to dirt or lack of lubrication. You can use the hole to apply oil or lubricant directly into the lock’s internal mechanism, ensuring it operates smoothly.
