Growing an avocado tree in a small pot at home is a fun and sustainable way to enjoy fresh avocados without buying them from the store. Here’s a detailed guide to help you get started:
- Choose the Right Avocado Seed • Save a seed (pit) from a ripe avocado you’ve eaten.
• Rinse it thoroughly to remove any pulp, but avoid removing the brown outer skin as it protects the seed. - Germinate the Seed • Toothpick Method: Insert three or four toothpicks into the seed and suspend it over a glass of water with the pointed end up and the flat end submerged in water. Keep the water level consistent.
• Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight. Replace the water every few days to keep it fresh.
• Within 2–6 weeks, the seed should crack open, and you’ll see a root emerge from the bottom and a sprout from the top. - Plant the Seedling • Once the seedling is about 6 inches tall, cut it back to 3 inches to encourage growth. When it grows again, it’s time to plant.
• Choose a small pot with drainage holes (6–8 inches in diameter is a good start).
• Fill the pot with a nutrient-rich potting mix, leaving space for the seed. Plant the seed with the sprout sticking out above the soil.
