Mold in a coffee machine can be a health hazard, but it’s manageable with proper cleaning and maintenance. Here’s how to find, remove, and prevent it:
How to Find Mold
1. Inspect Visible Parts:
• Check the water reservoir, drip tray, filter basket, and spouts for any black, green, or slimy residue.
2. Smell Test:
• If the coffee machine smells musty, mold might be growing inside.
3. Hidden Areas:
• Look in hard-to-reach spots like the internal tubing or under the carafe lid. Mold can thrive in damp, warm places.
How to Remove Mold
1. Disassemble the Machine:
• Remove all detachable parts like the water tank, filter basket, and carafe for cleaning.
2. Wash with Soap and Water:
• Clean detachable parts with hot, soapy water and a sponge. Rinse thoroughly.
3. Use a Vinegar Solution:
• Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water.
• Fill the water reservoir with the mixture and run a brewing cycle. This will kill mold in the internal components.
4. Rinse Thoroughly:
• After the vinegar cycle, run 2-3 cycles with plain water to remove any vinegar residue and odor.
5. Scrub Stubborn Areas:
• Use a soft brush or toothbrush to scrub moldy spots that are hard to clean.
6. Air Dry:
• Leave all parts to air dry completely before reassembling.
