I don’t know who started the myth that Styrofoam added to plant pots was a good idea, but it needs to end now.

Here are some additional errors gardeners often make:

  1. Using Poor-Quality Soil: Filling pots with garden soil instead of high-quality potting mix can lead to compaction, poor drainage, and insufficient aeration.
  2. Overwatering: Overwatering is a common problem, especially in pots without adequate drainage holes. It’s essential to check soil moisture levels before watering.
  3. Choosing the Wrong Pot Size: Pots that are too small can restrict root growth, while overly large pots may retain too much water, leading to root rot.
  4. Ignoring Sunlight Requirements: Placing plants in inappropriate light conditions—too much or too little sunlight—can stunt growth or cause plants to die.
  5. Neglecting Winter Protection: Many perennials in pots are more susceptible to freezing temperatures than those in the ground. Insulating pots or bringing them indoors can help prevent damage.
