Here are effective tips to keep parsley, basil, and coriander (cilantro) fresh for an extended period:
- Store Them Like Fresh Flowers
This method works especially well for parsley and coriander.
Steps:
- Trim the stems slightly.
- Place the herbs upright in a glass jar or cup with about an inch of water.
- Cover the top loosely with a plastic bag to create a humid environment.
- Store in the refrigerator. Change the water every 2-3 days.
Note: Basil is sensitive to cold. For basil, leave the jar at room temperature instead of refrigerating.
- Wrap in Damp Paper Towels
Perfect for all three herbs.
Steps:
- Rinse the herbs under cool water and pat them dry gently.
- Lay the herbs flat on a damp (not wet) paper towel.
- Roll the paper towel around the herbs.
- Place the roll inside a resealable plastic bag or an airtight container.
- Store in the refrigerator.
- Use Herb-Specific Storage Containers
Invest in herb-keeping containers designed to keep them fresh by providing a controlled environment.
Steps:
- Trim the stems.
- Place herbs in the container with a small amount of water at the bottom.
- Store in the refrigerator.
