There are two common ways to install a toilet-paper roll:

The loose sheet comes over the top of the roll and hangs down toward the front.
This is the position most people recognize immediately, and it offers several practical advantages.
2. The “Under” Position
The loose sheet comes from behind the roll, passing underneath it before hanging down.
Some people prefer this because it can look neater, makes the roll less visually prominent, or may be harder for pets and small children to pull.
So, is one objectively correct?
Not completely. There is no universal hygiene rule saying that everyone must hang toilet paper one particular way. However, the over position has some advantages that make it the more practical choice for many bathrooms.

1. It Is Easier to Find the Loose End
When the paper hangs over the front, you can immediately see where the next sheet begins.

With the under position, the loose edge can sometimes disappear behind the roll, forcing you to reach underneath to find it.
2. It Is Easier to Tear
With the paper coming over the top, you can usually pull the desired amount forward and tear it with one hand.
This becomes especially convenient when the holder has some resistance or when you’re trying not to touch the roll excessively.
The under position can require an additional movement because the paper is initially hidden behind the roll.
3. It Can Reduce Unnecessary Contact
A toilet is obviously an area where cleanliness matters.
When the loose end hangs over the front, you generally only need to touch the portion of paper you intend to use.
By contrast, if the loose end is tucked behind the roll, people may have to reach around or underneath the roll to locate it.
That doesn’t automatically make the under position unhygienic, but ease of use can influence how much people handle the roll itself.
