7 Things Everyone with a Monstera Deliciosa Needs to Know

The Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is one of the most popular houseplants due to its striking, tropical foliage and relatively easy care. However, to keep your Monstera thriving and looking its best, there are some key things every plant owner should know. Here are 7 essential tips to help you grow a healthy, vibrant Monstera Deliciosa.

1. Monstera Deliciosa Needs Bright, Indirect Light

Monstera plants naturally grow under the canopy of large trees in tropical rainforests, meaning they thrive in bright, indirect light rather than direct sunlight.

  • Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, leaving them with brown or yellow patches.
  • Too little light can slow down growth and prevent the characteristic fenestrations (holes) from forming.
  • Best placement: Near a north- or east-facing window with filtered light or slightly away from a bright south-facing window.

If your home has low light conditions, consider using grow lights to supplement their lighting needs.

2. Watering: Keep Soil Slightly Moist but Not Soggy

Overwatering is the #1 cause of Monstera problems. These plants like soil that is slightly moist but not constantly wet.

  • Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry.
  • Use well-draining soil (a mix with peat, perlite, or orchid bark) to prevent root rot.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes so excess water can escape.
  • In winter, reduce watering frequency since the plant’s growth slows down.

A good rule of thumb: If the leaves are drooping, the plant might need water. If they turn yellow, you might be overwatering.

3. Monsteras Love Humidity

Since Monstera Deliciosa originates from humid rainforests, it thrives in a high-humidity environment.

  • Ideal humidity level: 50-60% or higher.
  • Boost humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or misting the leaves occasionally (but not excessively).
  • Keep the plant away from dry air sources like heaters and air conditioners, which can cause the leaves to dry out.

If you notice crispy leaf edges, your plant might need more humidity.

4. Provide Proper Support for Climbing Growth

Monstera Deliciosa is a climbing plant in its natural habitat, using aerial roots to attach to trees for support. If you want large, beautifully split leaves, your plant needs something to climb on.
